The ČHE Kozjak project is currently undergoing an external review of its updated conceptual design, entrusted to this esteemed Swiss firm. As part of the review process, their representatives recently carried out a second visit—inspecting key project locations and holding in-depth technical discussions with the DEM project team regarding design solutions and forthcoming steps.
Gruner Stucky Ltd is a leading engineering and design company specialized in the dam and hydropower engineering and energy sectors since its foundation in 1926. To date, Gruner Stucky’s engineers and specialists have successfully completed well over 100 major schemes for the construction, extension and rehabilitation of dams and hydropower plants in Switzerland and abroad. Their hydraulic and environmental engineering experts also design state-of-the-art water supply systems, river renaturalization schemes and flood control infrastructure and measures.
On this occasion, we spoke with Dr. Cane Cekerevac from Stucky Ltd, who provided insights into the cooperation and the scope of the review process:
What is your opinion of the ČHE Kozjak project, and how important do you consider it, both locally and regionally?
The ČHE Kozjak project is of clear strategic importance. It will strengthen the reliability and stability of energy supply in Slovenia and the broader region. Moreover, it will increase the flexibility of the power system, facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, and thereby accelerate the green transition. At the local level, it also offers opportunities for economic development and infrastructure improvements.
What is your role in this project, and what does the external review encompass?
Our responsibility is to perform an independent, expert review of the updated conceptual design. This involves evaluating the technical solutions, ensuring their alignment with best practices and international standards, and assessing safety and environmental considerations. The objective of the review is to confirm that the project is technically sound, long-term sustainable, and ready to advance into subsequent phases of development and implementation.

This is already your second visit—what have you observed about the project team, Maribor, and the project overall?
We have been very impressed by the professionalism and commitment of the DEM team. It is evident that the ČHE Kozjak project is being developed with both strong technical competence and a high sense of responsibility. Maribor has once again struck us as a dynamic city with a rich energy tradition. Above all, we greatly value the open dialogue and constructive cooperation, which are essential for the success of a project of this magnitude.
At DEM, we are therefore especially pleased that the external review of the ČHE Kozjak project is entrusted to such a renowned and independent company with exceptional international expertise. Their knowledge and experience provide us with the assurance that safety, sustainability, and reliability remain at the very heart of this vital project.
